Mixed Berry Pie

This berry pie combines raspberries, black & blueberries. When I was a child I would visit my grandma in central WI. She had raspberry bushes in her yard & I remember spending my days eating raspberries & cream or raspberry preserves. My love of berries continued every summer on vacation in Barron County. We stayed at a resort where there were wild raspberry & blackberry bushes. Again I spent many mornings eating berries & cream. Every time we revisit the lake my wife now continues that tradition. A couple years back I had a frozen store bought mixed berry pie that I thought was the tastiest pie I've ever had. I was reminded of times spent with my family & decided I'd attempt to recreate the pie. My grandma, mom & dad have all passed & I have moved to a different town from my brother. Now when I make my pie it not only gives me a warm feeling from the taste but also from the fond memories of my family.

Kenmore Mixed Berry Pie
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, Pie Crust
  • 1 teaspoon salt, Pie Crust
  • 1/2 cup chilled shortening, Pie Crust
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, Pie Crust
  • 1/2 cup ice water, Pie Crust
  • 1 egg, Pie Crust
  • 1 teaspoon sugar, Pie Crust
  • 2 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen, Pie Filling
  • 2 cups raspberries, fresh or frozen, Pie Filling
  • 1 cup blackberries, fresh or frozen, Pie Filling
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, Pie Filling
  • 1 cup sugar, Pie Filling
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, Pie Filling

Step 1: Pie Crust

Process the flour, salt, shortening, and butter in a food processor until you get the visual consistency of fine meal.

Step 2: Pie Crust

Place the fine meal into a bowl. With a fork make a hole in the meal.

Step 3: Pie Crust

Pour the ice water in the hole & gently mix the water into the fine meal. Continue this process until the fine meal has the consistency of play dough.

Step 4: Pie Crust

Flour your board and rolling pin, and then roll out the dough. Divide the dough in half and roll out dough for a 2 crust 9-inch pie.

Step 1: Pie Filling

**If using frozen fruits, measure first, then thaw and drain fruit. Preheat the oven to 350F. Combine the flour, sugar, and cinnamon into a bowl, stir with a fork.

Step 2: Pie Filling

Add fruit into bowl, cover with a lid and shake until fruit is completely covered.

Step 3: Pie Filling

Place 1 crust into pie pan. Add fruit mixture to pan.

Step 4: Pie Filling

Wet the edges of the bottom crust by dipping your finger in the ice water & rubbing it around the edge of the crust.

Step 5: Pie Filling

Place the top crust on the pie and gently press the top crust to the bottom. Trim with a knife and roll under. Press together with the thumb and forefinger to make a scalloped edge.

Step 6: Pie Filling

Brush the top crust with the egg wash.

Step 7: Pie Filling

With the knife, place 8, 1/2 inch slits on the top of the pie.

Step 8: Pie Filling

Bake for 45-50 minutes. When checking to see if filling is done, insert a knife into the center of the pie. If there is little or no resistance, the pie is done.
